AAISA promotes and leads excellence in Alberta’s settlement sector by providing a spectrum of specialized professional development opportunities. AAISA creates and facilitates learning opportunities through multiple formats, with face-to-face learning events, blended and online courses, collaborative learning workshops, communities of practice, webinars, and conferences.
AAISA curriculum undergoes ongoing validation and revisions to meet current learning needs identified by the Settlement Practitioner Training and Accreditation Committee. Our Research and Policy department supports ongoing curriculum development by identifying emerging issues and trends through stakeholder-informed research.
The training courses that AAISA offers have been delivered for over a decade and have been designed specifically for the unique challenges that settlement practitioners face in their day-to-day work. Our training modules have been created to align with the Alberta Settlement Practitioner Competency Framework and to contribute to the ongoing professional development of settlement practitioners.
AAISA offers an online pre-service certificate program. The pre-service program is designed to provide foundational knowledge of the Canadian settlement sector to newly hired settlement practitioners and settlement professionals transitioning to settlement and integration practice. The certificate examines general settlement concepts with a focus on developing theoretical and practical competencies identified for success in the settlement sector. Courses completed in the pre-service certificate have been accredited by the Certification Committee and can be applied toward the requirements for certification as a settlement practitioner.
Settlement Practitioner Certification
AAISA’s Settlement Practitioner Training program was established in 1989 to recognize the professional accomplishments of Canadian settlement practitioners who meet a set of standard qualification criteria. AAISA offers the only program in Canada that provides certification to qualified settlement practitioners.
Formal certification promotes excellence in the settlement sector and is based on competencies that are outlined in the Alberta Framework of Competencies for Settlement Practitioners ( revised 2016). Certification is open to all eligible settlement practitioners currently working in the settlement sector.
AAISA Learning Community
AAISA supports collaborative learning projects and communities of practice by providing facilitated online workshops and collaborative space in the AAISA Learning Community portal. Current collaborative initiatives include communities of practice to address anti-racism and anti-Islamophobia and creating a culture of respect for LGBTQ people in the settlement sector.
